Speaker A
I am not much of a cinema goer but I do enjoy a good film. I usually buy a film online and watch it at home. I’ve got a wide screen TV and a projector. Sometimes, if I am in the mood, I use it. You feel as if you were in the cinema but I find it a bit cozier on my sofa. It’s also a lot cheaper to watch films at home. If I invite some friends, they bring popcorn and drinks and then you really can’t tell the difference.

Speaker B
The cinema is my life. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve wanted to become an actress. I would watch all the new musicals and children’s films and dream of playing the leading parts. When I was in my last year at school, I took acting classes to prepare for the New York Theater and Cinema Academy. After graduating, I auditioned at the Academy and got in! It was the happiest moment of my life, even more so than getting an Oscar two weeks ago!

Speaker C
Books are much more fun than films. I know most film directors want to make a film out of some classical book but so often the film versions don’t turn out well. At least to my taste. When you watch a film you are forced to believe what you see and when you read a book, you can imagine the characters and have your own personal experience with the plot. Watching a film just doesn’t trigger your imagination the way reading does.

Speaker D
I can’t remember the last time I was at the movies. I think it was the day I broke my arm. Crazy as it may be, I broke my arm going to see a new film. My girlfriend had asked me to go to the cinema with her, so I bought the tickets for Friday night. We were meeting inside the Star Cinema. It’d been raining hard and the pavement was very wet. I was five minutes late for my date, so I hurried up the stairs and slipped. The last thing I remembered was the terrible pain in my arm

Speaker E
I never miss a new film. I have a notification sent from the local cinema to inform me about any change in their shows. They change the schedule once every two weeks, so I go to the cinema every other week. Our local cinema is rather small, so they show two or three films at a time. Sometimes I watch a film every day for three days in a row to see all that’s new in the market. It does get expensive sometimes, but it’s worth it, the way I see it.

Speaker F
The theatre has more of an appeal to me than the cinema. I would go to see a play more often if they had more theatres around where I live. Local theatre companies have only two shows a year and that doesn’t satisfy my appetite, so I travel to London to see different shows may be once a month or so. Seeing real threedimensional people on stage is a lot more interesting than watching them on the screen. I love watching actors’ facial expressions and the interaction between them.

Now we are ready to start.

Speaker A
If you want to get new cultural and social experiences, the easiest, the fastest and the safest way is to go to a foreign country to teach English. If you have a university degree, an international certificate in English, a couple thousand dollars and about 3 months, you can start your life in an exotic location. I’m going to do this and I know people who’ve done it and I know what I’m talking about. You never know what to expect in a foreign country, that’s true, but isn’t it challenging at the same time?

Speaker B
I was thinking about spending my gap year teaching English abroad but I had second thoughts about it. I was told that only experienced teachers can get a working visa, coverage for their cost-of-living and a decent job. After reading some interviews on what’s it like to teach English in immersion camps, I gave up on the idea completely. That’s not what I’m ready to put up with. My parents are happy about that.

Speaker C
English is my major but the rivalry is so tense in the trade market now that I’m thinking of going somewhere for a couple of years to gain more experience and improve my teaching skills. Taiwan seems a perfect choice as everything is included for an inexperienced teacher – visas, accommodation and high salary. I’m worried about getting a social life there – I speak only English and I wonder if I can find friends there apart from my future students.

Speaker D
My uncle, David Dune, is a teacher, writer and runner. He is an educator with over 17 years of experience of teaching English as second and as a foreign language. He has taught and presented in Korea, Canada, France, and Ukraine. He specializes in Web 2.0 and using technology in the classroom. That must be an exciting life and the only thing I can think about is following in his footsteps. I hope he’ll share some secrets of being a good English teacher abroad.

Speaker E
I don’t remember how that magazine caught my sight but recently I read an interview with Neil Mullen who is a veteran English teacher in Japan. He started as a regular teacher and now he owns a school there. He is looking for new language teachers and I’m planning to send my CV. His e-mail address was included in the interview, not his personal address, of course. I just hope the e-mail won’t go to his spam folder and he’ll choose me as his employee.

Speaker F
People in my college are crazy about the idea of going to teach English somewhere in Thailand, China and what not. I listened to their heated discussions very attentively and understood it’s high risk. There are so many things to care about like visas, security, medication and cultural barriers. I’d better stay in the US to serve my country. In my view it’s more patriotic; besides, I’m not sure I can solve the problems connected with moving to another country.

Speaker A
As I see it, visiting other places really broadens your imagination. When you stay in one place, your mind gets bored from seeing the same old scenery every day. Traveling lets you get new ideas, new thoughts. I mean when you see how other people live, you begin to make mental notes or, or even written ones. You can use them later to create something extraordinary that others would want to read. So I grab any opportunity to travel.
Speaker B
Um, my parents never took me anywhere. On holidays we stayed home and watched TV. You know, the most exciting trip I ever took as a kid was a 30-minute drive across town to see my relatives. It was at Easter, it seems. I don’t think I’ve ever even owned a big bag or a suitcase, and so I had no idea how to pack for a trip when I had to travel on business two weeks ago. No one has ever taught me how,
you know.
Speaker C
I travel often on business. My company has many partners in over 10 countries, so I visit a new place almost every three months. Um, business trips aren’t long and are rarely exciting, so for me I’d say traveling is tiring. So, when on holiday I prefer to stay in my garden and tend to my flowers. I bet my kids aren’t too happy about that, well, um, usually, they are upset with me for that, but I am sorry I just can’t make myself get on a plane during my time off.

Speaker D
We go on short road trips every month. I like to show my kids new places in our area. We visit local museums, villages, monasteries and other fun spots. Let’s see, sometimes we just take day trips but sometimes we stay overnight in a hotel. The kids love hotels but they can be expensive. We often eat on the road, so we take most of the food with us. You know, it saves us money that way. If we meet new
people on the road, we get acquainted and save contacts for later.

Speaker E
I’ve never been on a package holiday myself. You know, I sell them to people every day. People really like to have packaged deals when they have a beach holiday in some foreign country. That way they don’t have to worry about accommodation and transportation. But it’s always been my dream to get one of the deals and spend 10 days on the white sand under the burning sun. Instead, I continue to sell this dream to others.
Speaker F
I literally see a new place every week. You see, I am a reporter for the “Travel” magazine, so traveling is my lifestyle. I get to experience new places from all their aspects: people, food, culture, traditions, um, all of it. You know, it’s a lot of fun but still, there are times I’d give a lot to be sent to a different place. Like, I am not too keen on eating snakes and spiders or sleeping in a hammock to keep away from tarantulas. I had to do that at one point, you know.
